MyMac Podcast #504 – And The Beats Goes On

mymac504
Rough week for Guy but he did manage to soup up his son Peter’s new (or old rather) laptop with more memory and an SSD drive. Gaz has apps just made for walking and that’s just what they’ll do. The GMen discuss the Beats maybe deal and what Apple could or should buy instead. The whole Dusty story is at the very end so if you don’t want to hear it (it’s rather sad) then just stop after the closing theme.

Gaz’s App Pick: Little Inferno £6.99 Reminded me a little bit of Machinarium $10  and World of Goo
People’s Pick: Gary Apter likes the Apple Store iOS app and thinks it’s the best way to make a Genius Bar appointment and to check in when you arrive. You can see what classes and events are scheduled and make a reservation. There have been FREE offers for music and apps. There are other things to look at promoting products and deals. Take a look. There are versions for the iPad and iPhone.

MyMac Podcast #503 – Same level of Stupid

mymac503
Sponsored by OWC

No show last week because Guy can’t stop messing around with the sound of the show and managed to muck it up beyond all repair. The show this week takes all the things you missed us say last week and puts them here. So it’s like it never happened (waving arms mystically). We record all your bumpers from the contest and thanks again to everyone who participated. Then we just have fun. Same GMen time! Same GMen channel!

MyMac Podcast #502 – Winner Winner! Chicken Dinner!

Back to a regularly scheduled kind of show. Apple’s Home Sharing works great except when it doesn’t and Guy is more hopeful about his sound quality this week. We finally announce the winners of the Bumper contest (see below) and is Apple’s CarPlay hardware the next big thing that Apple doesn’t actually make?

MyMac Podcast #501 – Mittens

mymac501
Sponsored by OWC

No Gaz this week as he gets his revenge on Guy for being gone for MacWorld. Or something like though it may actually just be spending time with the family someplace fun and not about Guy at all. Speaking of run on sentences, Owen joins Guy and they talk about Macworld (though in no great detail) in a very informative and revealing (where we find out why Guy is Gus and Owen is Opie! How exciting is that!). STILL no end to the podcast contest (next for maybe sure!) and lots of some of the interviews done by the MyMac Staff at some Expo or something.

MyMac Podcast #500 – About frigging time

mm500
Sponsored by OWC
You’ve waited, and waited, and waited some more for the 500th podcast and it’s finally here! No app picks or much about the Macworld Expo this week or stuff from Google + or Twitter. Gaz and Guy talk a little about playing with organs (the musical kind) on iPads and then things get REALLY interesting when we get all the former hosts together into one virtual room. Naturally they talk a lot about the history of the podcast and a lot of it will make you laugh. Stand by for action!

Second day of Macworld but the last day for us all being together. Join Guy, Vicki, Elisa Mark, Eric, and Owen as they yammer a lot about things mostly related to some kind of Tech event…maybe. Then Guy talks to the Jupiter crew at OWC about spaceships and massive storage, and a bunch of interviews we did on the Expo floor.

MyMac Podcast #499 – So close, yet so far away

mymac499
Sponsored by OWC
With this being show 499, you’d think the next one would be 500…or the one after that…nope. This IS however the last Gaz and Guy show before the Macworld Expo so get ready for fun. Guy has problems with multiple Apple IDs and has to go to Apple Support to get them fixed, Gaz has problems with Rugby, his Mac, and Airports, but it may have all been in hs head. Guy talks about the long journey ahead and Gaz tries in vain yet again to explain English money.

Guy’s App Pick: Not so much an app but a service. BIG ups to Apple Support for taking at least 2-3 hours of time walking me through all the problems that I had caused myself over the years in regards to Apple IDs. They even scheduled a time with a higher support person at my convenience to finish fixing it.
Gaz’s App Pick: AudioEngine A2 Speakers
People’s Pick: Mark Sheppard recommends WaterLogue

Thank you everyone for staying with us over the years. It’s been wonderful and we hope you’ll stick around for however long the ride lasts.

MyMac Podcast #498 – You won’t like me when I’m angry

mymac498
Sponsored by OWC
Just two…to five or more episodes until the 500th show! Can you feel the excitement in the air? If you can you should most likely go see a doctor since solid emotions in your nostrils is probably not a good thing. A certain group’s proposal (number 9, number 9,number 9,) seemed to really hack off Tim Cook at the last shareholder’s meeting, so Guy has a little chat with the founder of the NCPPR, Amy Ridenour to ask her about it. Please check the links below for the proposal itself and another to Ms. Ridenour’s blog about the incident. Gaz is looking for some better way to keep an iOS device on him to keep track of how much exercise he does and also a way to mount one in the kitchen. If only he could combine the two…

MyMac Podcast #497 – Monkey in the Middle

mymac497

The SSL Exploit for both the Mac and iOS is absolutely nothing to worry about unless you don’t live in a cave, have a Mac newer than a PowerPC, or use the internet. Do or have any of that and you should probably be going for those updates. Gaz is doing a lot of traveling, but it’s Guy’s Maps program that seems to be stopping progress. MyMac Podcast #496 – Nothing but net

mymac496
Sponsored by OWC

Ah it’s that time of year again where everything seems new! Yep, almost time for the Macworld Expo! What did you think I meant? While Guy makes T-Shirts, Gaz is looking for tech gear to keep track of how far he goes. ALL kinds of feedback this week too. Net neutrality seems to be under fire with Netflix on one side and Verizon on the other. You can bet if Verizon gets their way, the internet could be changed in the US for a long time.

MyMac Podcast #495 – Why buy when you can rent?

mymac495
Sponsored by OWC
Don’t you just HATE buying software and having that feeling of a one time price? Wouldn’t you rather just have to pay less for it each month or it stops working? Gaz and Guy debate this topic with their usual thoughtfulness so you probably shouldn’t expect a hard and definitive answer…or should you? Also the weather takes a hard beating or perhaps it’s the other way around, ISPs suck, Captain Kirk should sound like Curly, and Guy needs a more typical Press hat for Macworld. All this week on the MyMac Podcast.

MyMac Podcast #494 – Doing it on the run

mymac494
Sponsored by OWC

Because absolutely no one asked, Guy goes over in detail how he’s going to podcast using just iOS at the Macworld Expo. You’d think he’d have the process pretty much worked out by now. Meanwhile Gaz is excitedly testing rechargeable batteries in Apple devices that don’t have Apple’s logo, that rebel! While it all sounds rather mundane, this was a pretty funny show.

MyMac Podcast #493 – Oh iPod, we hardly knew Ye!

mymac493

Both GMen are sick this week, well more so than usual so please excuse the occasional cough. So the iPod has dropped more than 50% year over year in sales. Will Apple start pruning or will it be kept around for sentimental reasons? Guy and Gaz have their favorites and which ones they would dump and how they would change some of them to be more relevant today. Don’t forget to send in your GMen bumpers to have a chance to win in the 500th podcast contest!

MyMac Podcast #492 – Happy 30th Birthday Mac!

mymac492
Sponsored by OWC

The Macintosh is 30 years old and the GMen feel weird that they can remember that far back. They reminisce about first Macs and how they got started in all this stuff. Gaz talks about switching back to the Apple way of 2 monitors and Guy figures out a solution to recording 2 microphones on an iOS device. Maybe not the BEST way, but a way. The 500th Episode Bumper contest is in full swing, so make sure you contact them in all the usual ways and get them in for cool stuff!

OWC is not only sponsoring some prizes to give to the best Bumper makers, but is also helping Guy go to the Macworld Expo this year! Woo Woo! James and Guy go through the usual stuff and then talk about Apple’s latest way to separate people from money (just not all to them), iBeacons. Is it good? Is it bad? Is it latest dance craze sweeping the nation? YOU decide!

It’s available through the Mac App store in the UK at £2.99 this is a steal at that price. There is a free trial on the web site but to be honest just buy it. $4.99

MyMac Podcast #489 – It’s a NEW YEAR (same old podcast)

mymac489
New year, new times, new weather (cold), but the same old GMen. Sorry about that. However there is good news! First off it’s a shorter show than usual and we have a special interview with the woman that does the Siri voice (kinda). Lot’s of G+ stuff, and everything else you might expect from a MyMac Podcast and we are deeply and humbly apologetic about it.

Guy’s App Pick: Not an App pick actually. The MOGA ACE POWER game controller for any 5th generation iPhone gives you that external controller you think you always wanted. PLUS it has a built-in 1800 mAh battery which will extend the life of your phone as well. $99

Gaz’s App Pick: OK as we went to London I prepared with a few Apps
I already owned it currently costs £2.49 Tube Map App by M X Data.
I also used CityMapper (which I think also do other cities around the world. this one is free from CityMapper Ltd.
I also had an App to pay for our Car Park at Stanmore Station, the App is of course free but the parking costs 🙂 The App is DASH from Adaptis Solutions.

We also hired some of what are called the Boris Bikes, where you pay for the use of a Bike and then pay for the period you use it. I think again other cities use these I’ve put a link to the TFL website, and also to the App from Barclays but I think they will not be sponsoring the bikes in the future so the App may change. So I’ve also sent a link to a Bike App which is independent both Apps are free.

MyMac Podcast #488 – iOX FaceMessages

mymac488
So like chocolate and peanut butter, what could Apple shmoosh together from OS X and iOS to make either better? Oh and apparently Guy and Gaz say some funny stuff. Geez what did you expect? It’s almost Christmas.

Guy’s App Pick: Call Recorder by eCamm software $30. If you need to record anything related to Skype, this is the software to have. It just works. I could quibble about recording as a MOV file instead of pure audio, but they include tools for conversion. It’s what I use to record those huge amounts of calls to our Skype line.
Gaz’s App Pick: One Game to rule them all. Lego Lord of the Rings for the Mac.
£10.49. Curently on a holiday offer at half price. Some typical great comedic cut scenes.
Holiday Bonus Pick: iStat Menu £10.10 Single User £15.15 5 User License

MyMac Podcast #487 – Random Stuff

mymac487
OK, so not a lot of things going on Apple-wise so the GMen talk about their FEELINGS. Well not really, but their kids did get a good going over with what they’re up to. Lots of great stuff from you guys over on Google Plus, so they talk about that too. Yep, Pretty random.

MyMac Podcast 486: Android winning market-share…losing the future

mymac486
There’s a lot said about Android devices gaining all the market-share, but very little about what kinds of devices these are, or what people use them for. As it turns out, mostly cheap, old, and not all that good for much. Gaz and Guy look deeper into it while still managing their usual shenannigans.

People’s Pick: From Eric Stone. Here is a great people’s pick for everybody.  Sonic Dash is an excellent endless runner, like Temple Run.  You get to play as Sonic the hedgehog and run through a colorful world full of baddies, spikes, bombs, you will even loop upside down on occasion.  It is free in the App Store as a universal app for iPad and iPhone.  It has in-app purchases but you definitely don’t need to purchase any of them to play or enjoy the game.
