MyMac Podcast 531: But it involves goats!

mymac531
Goats? Yes…goats. We’re not “kidding”. Deal with it. Most of the past technical issues seems to be dealt with, though we’ve all thought that before haven’t we? The GMen give a lecture on what NOT to do when updating and how to clean up iTunes after CERTAIN people who may or may not be on this podcast thoroughly hosed his library.

MyMac Podcast 530: Next Week will be AMAZING!

mymac530
Guy updates to Yosemite which turns out to NOT be a great idea since his recording layout got hosed. Gas is in top form however and teases Guy about his lack of having SoundBoard by using…well…SoundBoard. They talk about Microsoft 365 and options available free or otherwise and it turns out that the more expensive option could be the best one.

People’s Pick: From Serenak (twitter) how about the Open University free Introduction to Cyber Security MOOC here

MyMac Podcast 529: Quick Thoughts

mymac529
Guy is back from the Sunshine State and quickly makes up for lost giggles as he and Gaz discuss CurrentC, GamerGate, Dead Product lines, and why speeding through Georgia at the end of the month is just a bad idea.

Gaz’s Tip: ctrl + eject brings up a submenu to put the Mac to sleep
ctrl + shift + eject instantly puts the Mac to sleep
cmd + Option (alt) + power instantly also instantly puts the Mac to sleep (for MacBooks)
Now to add a message to the lock screen you can
Right if you go to the Security & Privacy preference pane, then under the General tab, you then tick the checkbox Show a message when the screen is locked and add your message. I don’t think the message shouldn’t be longer than about 200 so make your message short and sweet.

MyMac Podcast 527: Apple Event (Mini Minimised)

mymac527
Guy is enjoying himself somewhere in the State of Florida this week and just gives Gaz time to recompose himself, and a recent guest has kindly accepted the invitation back on. YAY TheMacMommy. Sad Face Gaz as he thinks this might be the last Mac Mini he buys, well we all know like that’s going to be the case 😉 Not updated to YoSeme yet, not because of all the issues, hang on what issues 😉 but because of time. We will get back to the event later.

MyMac Podcast 526: Bose gets the hose on the nose

mymac526
Beats? Bose? Which one is better or right in this current cat fight? Audiophilles don’t care for either one but the GMen look at the issue and soon decide they wish they had talked about something else. Guy takes the long way home in upgrading a friend’s laptop and they both are very excited about the next Apple event. New Macs? Maybe!

Guy’s App Pick: FiLMiC Pro by Cinegenix. $4.99 in the iTunes app store. Awesome addition to filming video with your iPhone with great features like focus and exposure locks, speeded up and slow motion, three different aspect ratios as well as frame rates, audio options, many different uploaded options and a lot more. If you shoot video with your iPhone, this the the app you want to shoot it with.

Gaz’s Pick: IMDB Always useful whether you use the web or the IOS app versions the database has all you need for for buffs. Free

Bonus Mini Motor Racing for the Mac £1.99 or $2.99

People’s Pick: From Erick Diaz
Since getting the iPhone 6 (and now lusting for the Plus) I’ve been taking advantage of the bigger screen with some games I used to ignore. This is one of them, and the graphics are insane. When these guys rewrite the game using Metal (the Apple framework, not the music) this will look even more like a console game on iOS.

MyMac Podcast 525: Vegemite Sandwich? No Yosemite Sandwich!

mymac525
The GMen attempt to answer the question, “Can an Operating System be put between two slices of bread?” Well, they really don’t because it’s a stupid question, but they do talk about how to prepare for Yosemite and whether or not it’s a good idea to do that full clean system install.

Guy’s App Pick: Moviestorm by Moviestorm $225 at moviestorm.co.uk 3D animation package that the developers call a video sketch tool. It’s not easy to use and the interface takes some getting used to, but you can essentially make your characters come to life. Amazing results. Check out the website for examples of what some others have done.

Gaz’s Pick: Al ink sent in Google by Alister Jenks all about why your WiFi might not be as fast as you’d like, good read.
I’ve said it before I’ll say it again Preview, is an underrated and utilised application that comes free with your Mac. You can open PDF documents and make some basic changes like adding a speech bubble or just plain old text, highlighting a section with a rectangle or an oval, you may not know that you can even make some basic colour adjustments and make image size adjustments and I know that I’ve told you about adding a signature before, just open an image in preview and may be have a play.

I’ve dropped a link in the show notes from a site that talks about using Preview to edit your photo’s

People’s Pick:
From Erick Diaz Two people’s picks for iOS 8: Asphalt8. Free with in-app purchases, and take advantage of all the latest graphics. Looks like console games on iOS.

MyMac Podcast 524: Bend it like Beckham

mymac524
Melissa Davis takes a chance in joining the GMen for an episode. Many tried to warn her against it, but she just didn’t believe them. They have a long talk about iPhone bending as well as iCloud issues, Family Sharing SNAFU’s, and general all around recent Apple problems. Doesn’t sound like much fun, but they manage to turn every issue into rainbows and sunshine! Well, they laughed a lot about it anyway.

MyMac Podcast 523: Sad Face

mymac523
The sound is good, the time is right, but it’s still the same GMen. Messages somehow confuses my son Peter AND Dave Hamilton for Apple. Yeah, I don’t get it either. The GMen are back to using Google Docs because Apple’s Pages and iCloud is completely hosed and they have a discussion about the many missteps lately from everyone’s (or maybe a few people anyway) favorite electronics company.

Guy’s App Pick: Time Machine. For probably the first time ever, a file got lost for me. It was a Canon MTS MPEG file that I tried to convert using a different program. Not only did it NOT convert, it made the file disappear. Time Machine went back in time (without those pesky morlocks) and put it back.
Gaz’s App Pick: ANTI PICK DON’T USE ICLOUD IT’S BIG FAIL 🙁 OK that was because I’m upset I recently bought a pinball game for the iPad called PINBALL HD costs £1.49 and there are further in app purchases for more boards, this gives you 3 open boards but does give you access to a restricted board where you’ll need to buy the inApp purchase to access full functionality

MyMac Podcast 522: Shawn King just takes the fun out of everything

mymac522
Guy can’t leave well enough alone and has (yet again) changed his recording setup. This was nearly a disaster which means that even MORE changes are afoot (so give him a hand…gold clap). Shawn King comes on to talk to the GMen about all the new Apple stuff, the death of Macworld as a print magazine, and Canadian Football…wait really?

Logitech Rechargeable Trackpad for Mac
Pro’s:
Rechargeable!!!
It’s flat.

Slightly larger surface area.
As sensitive as the Apple version
Con’s:
May appear to be slightly less sensitive – but it isn’t

Simply in terms of the angle alone he prefers this to my Apple trackpad. All the functionality is there too.

MyMac Podcast 521: Breaking through the iClouds

mymac521
Gaz and Guy talk about Apple’s iCloud nude celebrity problems and strangely enough, no one broke into THEIR iCloud accounts looking for naked pictures of the GMen. Bud Lite’s Real Men of Whatever ads make a horrible warbly comeback and you guys put a ton of stuff into the MyMac Podcast G+ page. It’s Guy’s Birthday on the announcement of Apple’s new iStuff and Guy finally gives up and switches to mostly hardware to record the podcast with hilarious results that you won’t find out about until next week…if he remembers to talk about it then.

Gaz’s Pick: Was looking around the Mac App store, as there are times I’d like a Lightroom or Aperture type application to adjust some of my RAW photo’s that perhaps deserve a little more love and more to the point selective editing, I came across what looks like a pretty good alternative, normally 40GBP’s but is currently free in the Mac App store, well it was over the weekend of the 6th and 7th Sep, I hope it’s still free by the time you all hear this.

MyMac Podcast 520: You say it’s your Birthday

mymac520
Another struggle with Guy and audio, but the GMen soldier on! What’s coming from Apple September 9? You have no idea and neither do they, but that doesn’t stop them from talking about it anyway. Guy tears apart a Mac Mini to add memory and a hard drive and much to his surprise it worked when he was done. Gaz buys an AppleTV for is daughter which naturally means they’ll be a new one very soon. Want to help out with the podcast? Check out the Patreon page for the show. Gaz’s Pick: Not an App but a pick £40.00 GB, €49.00, $49.00, $69.00 NZ, $55.00 AU
People’s Pick: Allister Jenks likes Hyperlapse from Instagram. He thought he’d give this a go, even though he has a deep aversion to Facebook, including Instagram. It is a very simple app which takes a video and then speeds it up, with a little stabilisation for good measure. He was rather impressed with the results and once he saw that you can simply save the movies to your photo roll rather than be tied into Facebook & Instagram, he was sold. He uploaded one of his creations (apologies for the crooked horizon) to Vimeo.

MyMac Podcast 519 – A Tangled Web We Weave

mymac519
Guy and Gaz have a nice almost not crazy talk about easy to use website development tools, but before that Gaz gets wet and cold and Guy realizes after the fact that his ISP gave him a cheap slow router with not so good Wifi. Guy takes his son back to college and it costs him a fortune, we get some great feedback from our listeners about last week’s show, AND we got a Skype call that is only mildly threatening! So it’s been a good week.

MyMac Podcast 518: Still need a Mac or PC?

mymac518
What do you use your Mac for? Or better yet, can an iPad do it as well? Guy and Gaz take a look at what most people use computers for and if they could do most of it on something simpler like an iPad. They also announce the winner of Boinx Software’s Fotomagico, Gaz’s use of Apple gear while on vacation, and Guy simplifies his home network.

How long can you last in a parking lot with the foot permanently down on the accelerator and an unending swarm of cops willing to sacrifice themselves to get to you? Pako will let you find out. Just two controls (left and right) and SO many obstacles in your way? Can you eventually escape? No. Can you ever truly win? No. Is it an incredibly fun waste of time? Most certainly
Gaz’s (not so App) Pick: 360 Panorama
Take stunning 360 panoramas everywhere. 360 Panorama turns your iPhone, iPod Touch, or iPad into a full featured 360 degree panoramic camera. Easily capture immersive panoramas in seconds and instantly share your 360 view with the world. Simply pan the camera and watch as images are stitched seamlessly. 360 Panorama captures the scene in a way you never could with a traditional camera.

MyMac Podcast 517: A Potpourri of Stuff

mymac517
Well for better or worse, Gaz and Guy are back this week together after a 2 show break with them doing stuff OTHER than the podcast. They’re very sorry but may or may not do it again so there! Being away for so long they had lots of important stuff to say or at least they just had things to say. An interesting conversation about their opinion on whether or not Apple will ever go to the ARM Processor for the Mac, Gaz’s Tip, Listener feedback, and Guy has an app pick that he’s actually never used. That might sound odd, but remember we ARE talking about Guy.

MyMac516
Guy is off this week and it’s Gaz’s turn to have a guest on. mymac514
Took longer than usual since we had to start over because SOMEONE (or just Guy) said something inappropriate and in poor taste though not on purpose. He’s (Guy) just an idiot sometimes. This is the last week to enter the contest for a copy of LEGO MARVEL Super Heros so send your email to enter to “contest@mymac.com” and don’t forget to say LEGO MARVEL and MyMac in the header. People’s Pick: From Allister Jenks…Monty Python’s The Ministry of Silly Walks By Boondoggle Studios $1.99 I’m sure Gaz will appreciate this one. It’s a hit in our household. Simple enough to operate, hard enough to master, voiced by John Cleese!
